Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio
The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback
A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.
He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Uncovering His True Position
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
